Back in the day when Mickey Mouse was first created in the early twentieth Century in 1928, that little mouse was soft, high pitched, gentle and always backed up by his trusty friend Pluto the dog. Today in 2009 the latest Mickey Mouse video game has just been released and there is a difference: Mickey is far tougher, modern and some might say totally new. Disney have been saying Mickey has been 're-imagined' for the twenty first Century. Although it is only a video game, Mickey stars in 'Epic Mickey' and like any great cartoon character Mickey needed a bit of re-invention after a brief period of decline.
Mickey Mouse is one of the World's best known cartoon characters and this change could well be a shift in the direction of Disney in the future. Appealing to teenagers and children who are growing up in an ever changing tecnology driven world Epic Mickey brings home that modern side which should see Disney back on top. Epic Mickey is designed for the Nintendo Wii and won't be out on sale until later in 2010. But the theme is a 'cartoon wasteland' where Mickey must battle across the lands and depending on how the gamers play, Mickey could turn into a rat or be happy and helpful. It is all about how you treat other gamers online, Disney are trying to encourage a new style of gaming which it has to be said is commendable.
Disney has invested around £140 million in the past year or so in the video games market, which is the biggest in the world and Disney recognises the importance of appealing to a younger audience. The game sounds fun so keep an eye out next year!
