Phones Calls USA

Mobile.

It is not uncommon for us to take our mobile phones with us when we travel throughout Europe and automatically we have come to expect the network will be there for us when we arrive in a new country. However, the USA's mobile network operates at a different frequency band compared with UK and Europe so it will be necessary for you to ensure a number of things before you go: -

1.) Is you phone compatible with USA networks?
Check with your phone/network service provider.

2.) Has your phone access been programmed to operate on the USA networks?
Check with your network service provider.

And for your own peace of mind

3.) Do you know the charging tariffs that will be applicable?
Check with your network service provider.

Mobile phone charges when roaming can be very high and you may also be charged for incoming calls. It might be better to use text messages instead if you need to keep in frequent contact but check with the recipient first because some USA networks do not accept text messages from UK mobile phones.

A cheaper alternative could be to purchase a low-cost US network phone or explore the possibility of a pay-as-you-go SIM card which you could use in your own phone.

... and don't forget to take your battery charger and plug adapter.

Phone-card & Payphones.
One way to control your phone charges while travelling is to use a phone card which can be purchased in UK from the Post Office. They can be purchased for varying values and when used an indication of your balance is given. They are also far more convenient than coins.

Hotel phones
In the main although convenient for use they are also very expensive when even free local calls within the USA may bear a fee from the hotel.

Phone cards could come in handy if you need to use the hotel phone but read the phone card dialling information carefully to avoid those international dialling charges levied by the hotel!

Dialling Codes.

UK country code = 44

USA country code = 1.

from UK -> USA dial '001' or '+1' in front of the area code

and

from USA -> UK dial, usually, '044' or '+44'.
